Vehicle Description 1956 Jaguar XK140 MC DHC The 1956 Jaguar XK140 Pioneer, believed to be permanently lost to the sands of time by racing enthusiasts and automotive historians alike, was found unaltered, sitting in a garage for nearly three decades.
Adored and driven by Hall of Fame inductee, Denise McCluggage, who was an extraordinary woman known for her multiple legendary talents (including her Auto Journalism and Racecar Driving), most notably, this Jag was discovered a couple of years after her passing at the age of 88.
Originally gifted to McCluggage by a celebrated sportsman, her race team sponsor, and one of the most pivotal figures in postwar sports car racing, Briggs Cunningham, Lady Leadfoot (affectionately named by Motorsports friends and affectionate rivals alike) was the car that started everything for McCluggage and inspired her to race.
At that time both racing and journalism were taboo for women, and Denise was beyond her time in that respect, breaking down gender barriers on multiple levels.
Not only was she the first woman to participate in the sports she covered, at a time when women were seldom allowed into racing pits or close to any of the action in sports dominated by men, but Denise was also the first journalist to be inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame, and the first woman to receive the Ken W.
Purdy Award for Excellence in Automotive Journalism.
She brought automotive coverage to the New York Herald, the Indy 500, Les Mans, Grand Prix, and countless other media to Autoweek.
Her publishing and sustaining role in Autoweek during its infancy not only helped to keep the publication going but also played a crucial part in the growth of sports car racing in America, which continues today.
McCluggage never backed away from a challenge, and as proven by her mantra of Guts and Brilliance, later became the first female inducted into the Sebring International Raceway Hall of Fame.
Though she raced with many cars throughout her career and was riddled with accolades and noteworthy achievements, there was a fondness she held in her heart for this beautiful '56 Jag.
